Hirth identified Hu-i the king of the Hsiung-nu who invaded the country of Su-t’ê, i. e. Soldaia in Crimea according to him, with Ellac or Hernac, sons of Attila. But the argument of Hirth can not be accepted as true for the following reasons.(1) The country of Su-t’ê is identified with Sogdiana in the present Uzbekistan Republic of the SSSR, which has nothing to do with Soldaia in Crimea. Soldaia had not been of any importance until the 6th century when Procopius made mention of it for the first time.(2) The king Hu-i was already on the throne in 436 when the Chinese heard of the Hsiung-nu invasion of Su-t’ê, while either Ellac or Hernac could not be enthroned, if they were ever, until their father died in 453. This means neither of them can be identified with Hu-i.(3) The Hsiung-nu is said to have subjugated Su-t’ê for three generations at the time of Hu-i. In other words, the subjugation was made by Hu-i’s grandfather or great-grandfather. But it was sometime before 360 A. D. that the Huns conquered the Alans, which can not be looked upon as the time of grandfather or great-grandfather of Ellac or Hernac. This will clearly show that the subjugation of Su-t’ê by the Hsiung-nu is not identical with the conquest of the Alans by the Huns.(4) According to the Wêi-shu, the country of Su-t’ê is called Wên-na-sha, i. d. Hûn-nasha “king of the Hûnna or Hsiung-nu”. This was because Su-t’ê had been under the control of the Hsiung-nu. On the other hand, the Sui-shu says that Sogdiana had been ruled by a royal family called Wên until they were replaced by another family named Chao-wu. The author is of the opinion that Chao-wu, *Žaubu, *Čaubu, might have been the name of a branch of the Hephthalites who put Sogdiana under their control and is identical with jauvla in the Toramaṇa inscription. Wên of the Sui-shu must be an abbreviation of Wên-na of the Wêi-shu and must mean the Hsiung-nu. This will confirm that Su-t’ê is identical with Sogdiana on one hand and that Su-t’ê was really conquered by the Hsiung-nu or any people called by the similar name on the other. 内容記述 | The statement of the Wêi-shu on Su-t’ê has been believed by some scholars to be the conclusive evidence of the Hsiung-nu and Huns identity since 1899 when F. The author’s opinion is being published in the Central Asian Journal under the editorship of Prof. K. Jahn under the title of “Sogdiana and the Hsiung-nu”. The identity of the Hsiung-nu who invaded Sogdiana is discussed there. | |||||
