内容記述 | In the 10th century, what is now northern Vietnam became independent from China to be ruled by “men of prowess” without patrilineal system of succession. Subsequently, however, long-term dynasties ruled successively, the first being the Ly (1009-1225). In order to clarify how a dynastic tradition was created under the Ly kings, this paper aims to reconstruct the genealogy of the royal family, and to analyze the political history with special reference to the roles played by members of the royal family such as queens, queen mothers, and kings’ children. The reign of the first three kings was characterized by such customs as poly-queen system, co-ruling system by a powerful king and adult princes, struggle for succession following every king’s death. During the latter stage after the fourth king, however, all the six kings ascended the throne in their childhood due to their patrilineal blood, mono-queen and poly-concubine system were established after the fifth king. Nevertheless, ascendance of an infant king born from the legitimate queen was not yet indisputable. Nor did the kings’ family and relatives form a strong body of a patrilineal clan. O0n the contrary, mother-son co-ruling system was often enforced during the latter stage, even after the king had reached adulthood. Throughout the Ly period princesses played critical roles through marriage alliances to assure security in the countryside, while woman in the royal family were to perform almost all tasks in the central government whenever competent adult kings or princes were absent. In sum, the Ly kingship was always sustained by temporary cooperation of closer members among the royal family, each of whom could act independently based on his / her individual household. What secured the throne of infant kings, hence a dynasty, has so far been regarded as external elements such as Confucian ideology, interests of other powerful families and Buddhist sects. However, the non-patrilineal (and non-patriarchal) structure of the royal family itself and the mothers’ roles within it should not be overlooked. | |||||
