In relation to this, the following five propositions are outlined and established. 1) Ishiguro has been strongly influenced by 1960s ‘speculative fiction.’ One of the salient features Ishiguro shares with the 1960s trend in science fiction (or speculative fiction as defined by Judith Merrill) is magic realism. 2) All of Ishiguro’s novels are quest romances. The Buried Giant is an unmistakable quest romance. All the novels are revealed to be including variations on the same structure. 3) All of Ishiguro’s novels are forms of historical fiction. Ishiguro’s novels have been invariably concerned with the history of the interminable, ‘long twentieth-century’, a century of wars and concentration camps. 4) Ishiguro’s narratives are filled with silences as in the modern Japanese novel. Readers of Ishiguro are invited to make silences speak, and to read between and behind the lines. His novels have significant affinities with those of Soseki Natsume, and Yasunari Kawabata. 5) Ishiguro’s oeuvre so far can be seen as Freudian/Derridean ‘works of mourning’ Ishiguro is engaged in Freudian ‘work of mourning’ as Jacques Derrida had done in his last years. What he is mourning for are humdrum, ordinary people.
