The answer to this problem is as follows. 1) The truth which Descartes found is a basis for the modern physical science and brings about a revolution in the view of the world. His mechanistic view of the world is different from the organic view of nature supported by the concept of the "forme substantielle" which is the principal idea in Aristotelico-Scholastic view of the natural world. It is clear that Descartes' idea was founded on the negation of the traditional theory of truth. Consequently, Descartes thinks that the Eternal Truth is a thing created, therefore, it is not eternal but temporal. 2) Moreover, Descartes' idea of creation is in accordance with the Biblical thought of "creatio ex nihilo" which is different from the Platonic view of creation. The idea of "creatio ex nihilo", of course, involves the transcendental existence of God towards the created world. Descartes deliberated on this implication and thus placed the infinite will of God beyond human understanding which was able to conceive of the Eternal Truth. 3) The relation between God and man determines man's attitude towards the physical world. 内容記述 | Descartes considered that the Eternal Truth is not an eternal being but a creature, namely created by the free will of God. His idea is very original and is very different from the traditional Thomistic doctrine and even from his contemporary philosophers. Why does Descartes think like this? This is the problem which I shall treat in this paper. God exists beyond the Eternal Truth. The physical world was created by the free will of God and was conditioned by the theory of the Eternal Truth. | |||||
