But in each case, we can detect a common interest in the irreversible processes that inform both physical phenomena and human life. Taken as a whole, the work reveals that Terada envisioned a synthesis of the literary depiction of human life with the scientific point of view found in physics. Terada remained active as both a scientist and a writer throughout his life, indicating that he subscribed simultaneously to the \"two cultures\" of modern scientific research and traditional literary expression. 内容記述 | Terada Torahiko (1878-1935) was a Japanese physicist who played an important role in advancing the study of physics in modern Japan. Not only did he publish scientific papers in the fields of experimental physics and geophysics-especially seismology-but he also wrote numerous essays on a wide range of scientific and literary subjects. Both his scientific writings and his literary essays can be said to reflect a constant interest in phenomena that proceed irreversibly in the flow of time. "Biboroku" (Memoranda), which was written in 1927, is a notable example of this interest. This work contains 12 vignette-like sections on variety of topics. Some of the sections criticize trends in modern physics, while others describe the deaths of various acquaintances. But in each case, we can detect a common interest in the irreversible processes that inform both physical phenomena and human life. Taken as a whole, the work reveals that Terada envisioned a synthesis of the literary depiction of human life with the scientific point of view found in physics. Terada remained active as both a scientist and a writer throughout his life, indicating that he subscribed simultaneously to the "two cultures" of modern scientific research and traditional literary expression. It seems clear that he hoped to unite these two different cultures within the scope of his scientific and literary achievement as a whole. | |||||
