This method consists in assuming the distributions of axial velocity and magnetic field in the form containing parameters and satisfying the boundary conditions, and determining the parameters so that a certain integral quantity is minimized. Assuming the Hartmann number sufficiently high, the distributions of velocity and magnetic field are chosen by boundary-layer considerations. It is found that the shape of assumed distribution has a significant effect on the calculated value of the flow rate for the channel with insulated walls. On the contrary, the assumed distribution hardly affects the flow rate in the case of conducting walls provided that Hartmann number is large.
