It applied a scientific theory of style to art history, using five pairs of concepts, such as linear versus painterly, which indicates the stylistic development from Renaissance art to Baroque art. It is one of the most influential books on art history. Japanese translations of the Principles are by Kenji Moriya and Tadao Kaizu, published in 1936 and 2000, respectively.\nIn this paper, I first introduce the details of the two Japanese translations and examine their different attitudes. Second, I clarify that Yomokichi Sawaki (1886-1930) significantly influenced the two Japanese translations, and investigate Sawaki’s contact with Wölfflin and his writings. Third, by exploring the early reception of the Principles between 1926 and 1927, I indicate the characteristics of Sawaki’s perception. Finally, by comparing Sawaki’s evaluation of the visual arts and that of the editorial staff of the literary magazine Shirakaba, I elucidate a specific aspect of the reception of the Principles in Japan. 内容記述 | Heinrich Wölfflin’s book Principles of Art History was published in Germany in 1915. It applied a scientific theory of style to art history, using five pairs of concepts, such as linear versus painterly, which indicates the stylistic development from Renaissance art to Baroque art. It is one of the most influential books on art history. Japanese translations of the Principles are by Kenji Moriya and Tadao Kaizu, published in 1936 and 2000, respectively. In this paper, I first introduce the details of the two Japanese translations and examine their different attitudes.
